Our Milk

The Story

We first started milking in November 2019 and finished our first season in February, 2020.

We tested our milk quality at regular intervals throughout the season. 

For breeding purposes, we chose LIC as an independent organisation to measure the milk's quantity, composition and somatic cell count from each ewe.

 

Our milk fat, protein and lactose content impressed us and our cheesemakers alike!

 

Our contented River Braid ewes produced excellent milk in our first season.

The table below shows River Braid’s milk composition in late January 2020 and the 2019/2020 total solids season average for comparison.

We have been supplying our rich, nutritious sheep milk to the SMSG (Sheep Milk Supply Group) who supply artisan cheesemakers around the South Island. These cheesemakers include Viavio, Kaikoura Cheese, Geraldine Cheese Company, Gibbston Valley Cheese Company and Whitestone Cheese. They make a range of different, award-winning sheep cheeses, including, Pecorino, Ricotta, Manchego, Parmesan and Brinza.
